The history of Labuan Bajo cannot be separated from Flores – the island of Cabo de Flores in Portuguese. The oldest record of Labuan Bajo was discovered in 1862.

Labuan Bajo was originally one of the villages of 19 villages and sub-districts in Komodo District, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Now, Labuan Bajo has been developed into the city of Labuan Bajo. The use of the name and history of Labuan Bajo cannot be separated from Flores – the island Cabo de Flores in Portuguese.

Cabo de Flores meaning Tanjung Bunga, given by S.M. Cabot to refer to the eastern region of Flores. Since 1636, the name Flores was then officially used by the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies Hendrik Brouwer. The original name of Flores is Nusa Nipa which means Snake Island. From an anthropological perspective, this name is better because it has philosophical and cultural significance.

The oldest records mentioning the name Labuan Bajo are in a report entitled Koloniale Jaarboeken Maandschrift tot Verspreiding van Kennis der Nederlansche en Buitenlandsche Overzeesche Besittingen by Jacques Nicolas Vosmaes in 1862. The Bajo tribe is a native Indonesian fish man. Miraculously, their bodies underwent the evolution of an enlarged spleen up to 50% larger.

With a size that is above average, it allows them to withstand swimming at depths of up to 60 meters for 13 minutes without any tools. The researchers also found the presence of the PDE10A gene in the Bajo tribe. This gene functions to control certain thyroid hormones. In animals such as mice, thyroid hormones are associated with spleen size.

Labuan Bajo has been under the control of a number of Islamic sultanates from Sulawesi Island several times, one of which is the Kingdom of Gowa Tallo. Since then, many indigenous Bugis have migrated to Labuan Bajo. Not surprisingly, at this time there are many traditional Bugis and Bajo houses next to each other.

In 1795, Labuan Bajo became the base of operations for the most famous Pirates of the Bajo Tribe. In 1823, the Illano Pirates, Sulu, Bajo, and Tobelo attacked the northern coast of Manggarai.
